RS-439 - Great Northern's Salmon Bay Drawbridge

This Reference Sheet discusses the double track Salmon Bay Drawbridge of 1912-1913. The new bridge was part of a 4.7 mile long line change that shortened and straightened the line of the former Seattle & Montana which extended geographically north from Seattle to Burlington Washington. The bridge handled then, and still does today, traffic to and from the east and to and from the 'Coast Line' to Vancouver BC.

In 1948 a structural member tying the concrete counterweight to the draw span failed with bridge in the open position. Repairs took 189 days while trains detoured via connecting GN and NP industrial trackage through Ballard.
