The Great Northern Railway Historical Society Company Store is pleased to offer this HO scale kit of the world-famous Izaak Walton Inn at Essex Montana. This kit was designed using blueprints from the Great Northern Railway Historical Society's archives.

The Izaak Walton Inn at Essex MT, now a recreational hotel, was built by the Addison Miller Company on land leased from the Great Northern Railway to house the three helper crews, up to nine snow fighting crews and three or four Division Officers often assigned to snow fighting duties in the winter. Opened in 1939, it was the last of several eating houses and boarding houses at Essex. The cost of construction was estimated to have been about $40,000. The railroad bought the hotel from Addison Miller in 1956 for $18,000, and sold it for $17,000 in 1957.

Great Northern named of the helper station at the bottom of the west slope of the Rocky Mountains Essex when the line was built in 1891. In 1926 the station name was changed to Walton, and in 1947 the name was changed back to Essex.

Our model kit by Hidden River Manufacturing is designed so that it is easy to build and features:

  • All basswood and aircraft plywood construction.
  • Modeled from actual Great Northern plans.
The model is an accurate representation of the exterior of the building with only interior structural bracing provided to stiffen the structure.

On a scale of 1-5 in complexity this kit is a three in that it needs a fair amount of wooden laser kit assembly skills. This kit comes with a flash drive with many captioned photos that will walk you through the construction process.

The footprint of this model is 8 inches wide with porches, by 16 inches long.  This is a large structure!
