 Single span Stone Arch Bridge

This forty-foot long single arch Stone Bridge, with stone wing walls is a model of a Great Northern Railway structure near Nora Minnesota on the line between St. Cloud and Hinkley. This line was built in 1882.  Unlike the Pennsylvania Railroad, stone arch bridges were not common on the Great Northern. Stone arch bridges were used where a ready supply of stone was available. They were permanent structures with very low maintenance costs and excellent resistance to fire damage. This particular bridge was most likely built after 1888 when the Eastern Railway Company of Minnesota arrived at Sandstone MN, the location of a large deposit of construction quality sandstone extracted from a quarry that operated for many years.

The model is made up of six unpainted pieces made from high density casting gypsum. The arch is two separate castings split down the middle to make a single - track bridge.

Size is 11.5 inches long and 3 inches high.
